Scaling:
Scaling is a procedure of removing tartar (calculus), plaque and stains that gets deposited on the surface of teeth, over the time.
Scaling helps to keep the gums healthy so that teeth remain firm.
Plaque, tartar (calculus) and stain are the deposits on the teeth that constantly initiate the gums and interfere with healthy attachment of gums on teeth.
If these deposits remain attached to teeth for continuous period of time and are not removed by scaling, they cause infection and deteriorate the health of gums causing loosening of teeth over a period. The gums become red, swollen and bleed while brushing or eating. Clinical condition is known as Pyorrohea.
Gingivitis & Perodontics and may cause tooth loss if immediate measure are not taken.

What is Plaque and Calculus?
Dental calculus can be defined as soft, sticky, deposits that form the bio firm adhering to the tooth surface and other hard surfaces( dentures and fillings) in mouth.
This is colorless film and contains food particles and bacteria which multiply rapidly and start infection in the gums.
Calculus: When plaque is not cleared from the tooth surface within 10-14 hrs by brushing it gets hardened by mineralization and forms tartar also named calculus.Once formed it can only be removed by professional scaling and polishing and not by brushing.
Root Planning: Calculus is deposited on teeth above and below the margin of gums.
The calculus that is deposited above the margins of gums is removed by scaling and that deposited below the margin of teeth is removed by deep scaling and Root planning in which the surface of root is smoothened and cleaned.
Why Scaling & Polishing is necessary for everyone?
Regular scaling and polishing by the dentist is important so as to remove the calculus deposits that occur even after careful brushing by you.
This procedure restores the girginal health by completely removing deposits that cause girginal infections and swelling. If not done regularly these deposits accumulate over time and cause the gap (pocket) between the gum and tooth which gets deeper with time when further bacteria grow in those pockets. The bacteria multiply rapidly and so continue damaging the gums. This further deteriorates and worse the condition so then the treatment plan now gets more extensive and includes deep cleaning, deep cuttage and flap surgeries might be required for some cases.
How it is done?
Scaling involves cleaning of teeth above and below that gum line so that all the deposits are thoroughly removed.
At our center, we use EMS technology. This unit has a small tip and high frequency scaling tool along with water spray technology which delivers higher patient comfort and makes the procedure for removal of calculus more time effective. It enables more gentle and effective scale within a shorter timeframe than conventional scaling tools.
The unit is also designed for complete sterilization, integral part of our practice. |
