What are Dental Implants? Types & Procedures

May 19, 2020

In simple words, dental implants are artificial structures that dental surgeons place into an individual's jawbone and allow it to fuse with the bone over time. Dental implants also act as a replacement for the root of missing teeth, and further, the artificial tooth root serves to hold a replacement tooth or bridge. Any individual might need an implant if they lost one or more teeth. And having a dental implant fused into the jawbone is closest to a natural tooth because it stands on its own and has excellent stability.

The process of merging fusion between the jawbone and the implant is known as 'osseointegration.' With the changing times, technology and science have progressed as well, leading to improved outcomes of dental implant placements, which has resulted in a success rate of almost 98% for dental implants.

With specialized devices, the dental surgeon places an implant into the jawbone, which acts as an anchor for an artificial tooth, called a crown. The device is called an abutment that connects the artificial tooth to the implant. Furthermore, the crown is custom made for each individual's mouth and matches the colour and shape of their teeth. As a result, they look, feel and function like the natural ones.

Here are a few advantages of getting dental implant surgery over dentures:

·        It looks more natural and feels more comfortable

·        It has a higher success rate

·        It improves chewing function

·        It leads to a lower risk of cavities

·        It causes decreased sensitivity in nearby teeth

·        It leads to better maintenance of bone at the site of the lost teeth

·        It doesn't need to be taken out and cleaned every night

Here are the two types of dental implants:

Endosteal

Endosteal implants are the most common types. A dentist embeds them in the jawbone, and each can hold one or more artificial teeth.

Subperiosteal

A dentist affixes a subperiosteal implant on the top of the jawbone. They choose this option for people who don't have much height to their jawbone.

Every individual is likely to have a different experience during the implant surgery, and factors may influence this, including:

·        The number of teeth that requires replacement

·        The location of implants within the jaw

·        The quality and quantity of bone at the implant site

·        The person's underlying oral and systemic health

Some additional procedures may be necessary depending on these factors, which includes:

Ridge modification

Some individuals have a jawbone abnormality that prevents enough bone for an implant from developing. It is rare, but in such cases, a dentist may need to perform ridge modification. This process involves lifting the gum to expose the area of deformed bone. Then, the surgeon will use a bone or bone substitute to repair and build up the area. This leads to an improved quality of jawbone while preparing for a dental implant surgery.

Sinus augmentation

At times, placing an implant in the upper jawbone isdifficult, the reason being the location of the sinuses. In this case, the dentist may need to perform a sinus augmentation; a procedure to lift the areaof sinuses while allowing more bone to develop for successful implantation. Teeth replacement cost in India varies on the choice of clinic, dentist and afew factors listed below:

·        The location of implants within the jaw

·        The number and types of implants needed

·        The need for any additional procedures that may or may not be necessary to prepare for actual implant placement surgery.
